Yes After doing Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films, Genelia is taking up her first Malayalam Film directed by Ace cinmetographer Santosh Sivan. The film titled ‘Urumi’ which refers to a flexible sword used in Kalari fights also stars Prithiviraj opposite Genelia. While ‘Urumi’ means a sword in Malayalam, the word is used in Tamil to refer a ‘melam’ used in special occasions. Rest of the cast is to be finalised. Film will be a bilingual film and will be shot in both Malalyalam and Tamil languages.
Sankar Ramakrishnan, who had directed the promising short film Island Express in the Kerala Cafe anthology, is writing the script. The film, a bilingual, is set in the 15th century and will be made for international audiences,” Santosh Sivan said to a leading English daily. Urumi is about a group of men who wanted to assassinate Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese explorer who set foot in Kappad in Calicut in 1498. The film will have an English subtitle- “Who Killed Vasco De Gama?” Genelia will play a Portuguese princess while Prithviraj will be the leader of the gang that wants to kill Vasco De Gama.
The incidents of the film would be a recreation of the 15th century when Vasco Da Gama first came to India. Santhosh Sivan is going to put in every details from history to make this into a serious period piece. Interestingly, Genelia is a popular actress in all other south Indian languages (Tamil, Telugu and Kannada) and ‘Urumi’ is expected to take her to the Kerala audience. “She looks innocent and seemed right for the role,” says Santosh Sivan. “The filming of Urumi will commence in August in Kerala. I have directed and photographed all my films,” he added.
